Trekking on your mountain bike from our Inn is an enjoyable way to experience the varied landscapes around the "malpais" (lava flows) or Oso Ridge.
Most routes to the South in El Malpais National Monument and BLM's National Conservation Area offer relatively flat and easy travel with great views of the "Chain Of Craters" and access to the Big Tubes Area for hiking. If planning to hike over lava, be sure to bring boots with ample ankle support and heavy soles.
* Please note that these routes are dirt and may become impassible to vehicle traffic when wet due to our heavy clay soils. Some areas of road may comprise of loose cinders and/or exposed bedrock of lava which are highly abrasive and hard on tires and unprotected riders if one "hits the dirt". Please remember that bicycles are considered mechanized vehicles and are prohibited from use in Wilderness Areas.
The terrain along Cibola National Forest Roads 50 and 49 are graveled and also fairly low-key with great views of Oso Ridge and associated cinder cones. For those hard-core enthusiasts, there are plenty of opportunities to test your stamina on secondary dirt roads and old logging roads with extreme altitude gains and great views of Mt. Taylor and surrounding mesas.
Regardless of where you decide to bike, be sure to bring tire repair supplies, plenty of drinking water, food, extra clothing, head lamp or other light sources and map of the area with you.
